For the second time in fall 2007, the Timonium Optimists co-sponsored this project in collaboration with the Baltimore County Police Athletic League (P.A.L.). Children from seven P.A.L. Centers around the county were treated to a day in the country on the Phoenix farm of Timonium Optimists Dick and Mickey Price. Dick and Mickey coordinated plans with a variety of government agencies, organizations and private individuals to pull off a very special experience for youth.
Second Annual P.A.L Day on the Farm in Baltimore County
A Day on the Farm for about 96 P.A.L. Center kids came off without a hitch. Set-up had been accomplished the day before and early on that Friday morning—a day when public schools were closed to students. Despite threatening forecasts, the weather cooperated.
The youngsters arrived around 9:30 a.m. in vans from the various P.A.L centers, and they stayed until about 2:30 p.m. Each group was accompanied by staff from their center. The kids were kept busy with games, crafts and hayrides, 4-H animals to see and a demonstration with BCPD police dogs. Lunch was provided, plus every kid took home a shiny apple. A group of 15 Coppin State College student-volunteers, 4-H members and representatives from the Police Dept. and P.A.L. Board also came.
More than a dozen Timonium Optimists volunteered their time before, after and during the event to set up, clean up, and to help with games and serving lunch.
Feedback from all involved—especially the kids—was so positive that the Timonium Optimists plan to continue this project!
The P.A.L. Board awarded the club a certificate of appreciation for co-sponsoring the event.
