Support for Youth Athletics

For many years from the inception of the Timonium Optimist Club in 1957, youth sports were a primary focus of club activities. As the inclusion of sports in school programs and through other community sources grew, the role of the Timonium Optimists has shifted. However, the club still believes in the importance of athletic competition and other recreational activities for youth. The Timonium Optimists continue to support the Varsity Football program at Dulaney High School and Lutherville-Timonium Recreational Council programs.

Varsity Football—Chain Gang Service

During the fall football season, the club assists the Dulaney High School Athletic Dept. by manning the down- and yard-markers for varsity home games. Volunteers need no experience or knowledge of the game. We provide on-the-job training! This is a fun way to spend a Friday evening or Saturday afternoon in the fresh air supporting the youth of our community.

Each game requires of squad of three or four people for a time period of about two hours. Volunteers can sign up in late summer as soon as the game schedule is available. The club receives recognition for its service by loud-speaker announcement at each game and by the posting of our club banner on the stadium fence.

LTRC Girls’ Softball

The club sponsors a girls’ softball team each spring for the Lutherville-Timonium Recreation Council.  One of our members, Don Imwold, has long been a coach for that LTRC program.

LTRC Chess Club

In the summer of 2001, the club donated start-up money to the Lutherville-Timonium Recreation Council for a new chess club to be based at Ridgely Middle School. That chess club continues to thrive.
